Activities of the Programme
Improvement of campus :
The sense of developing the area where they live or work is very much needed. Keeping this aspect in mind, students are exposed to several activities that are aimed at improving the campus environment. Several special camps are organised for this purpose. In addition, volunteers take part in college events and extend voluntary support.
Blood Donation Programme :
Donating blood to needy people is one the major services rendered by our students. In this context, an awareness programme on Blood donation and Blood Donation Camps are organized in our college. The students are also regularly donating blood to the needy patients at Government Rajaji Hospital, Apollo Hospital, Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Vadamalayan Hospital.
Traffic Regulation Programme :
Volunteer students of both first and second years involve in the regulation of traffic in the city limits.
Scribe Work :
It is our regular activity to extend support to the visually challenged students in writing their examination as a scribe.
Trekking Programme :
A trekking expedition programme was organized to create awareness about environmental degradation, deforestation, and sustainable development.
AIDS Awareness Programme :
Under the NSS, a Red Ribbon Club has been under operation. Several Rallies, Workshops, Guest Lectures and Awareness Programmes are organized through the Red Ribbon Club.
Rallies are organized in frequent intervals to create awareness on matters related to Smoking, AIDS and Health, Nutrition, Family Welfare and Sanitation
Ten Day Special Camps :
Special Camps (10 days) are conducted annually by each NSS Unit. The camp is fully funded by the Government of India. The camp is usually located in rural villages & sub -urbs. Volunteers may involve themselves in cleaning the village areas, undertaking afforestation works, conducting stage shows or procession creating awareness on social problems, education, cleanliness etc, organising trekking expedition, providing education support to local schools and conducting health camps. There are no pre-defined or pre-assigned tasks. It is the volunteers' imagination and understanding of the needs of the society and extending the services in whatever ways that are feasible
NSS Day :
NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities. The volunteers who have done substantial services are appreciated and awarded
Public Service Programmes :
To create awareness on health and sanitation and to involve in public services, evening camps, morning camps, one-day camps and half-day camps are organized. Student volunteers participate in the public service programmes as and when the need arises For instance, students undertook activities such astransportation of ballet papers and election kit, scrutiny of voter’s identity and regulation of voters during local body elections
Other Activities :
Group discussions are organized in the college campus for the benefit of second year students. A cultural team consisting of NSS volunteers practice drama regularly on topics of social concern
The college has established good network with various NGO’s such as Youth Red Cross, Teddy Trust, Habitat for Humanity International and carry out several activities. The NSS units of our college obtain excellent support from the Coordinator of NSS programme of theMadurai Kamaraj University and the Management of The American College, NSS Committee and the academic and non-academic staff.
